User settings managed by Sport Track plugin
« on: January 07, 2010, 04:34:23 am »

Hi all !

I moved one posting from another thread to this new thread, because I think, that this is
a very interesting item and not everybody is following the original thread.

The discussion came up, when Phil wrote this:

I agree with you about the user settings. It's a shame because it's available in the communication protocol, but it's not implemented in the software.
I tested it when I started implementing the plugin, but there are so many settings that I eventually gave up and dropped it.
Maybe I'll add it in the next version (what settings do you think are most important?).

Regards,
-Phil

I didn't know, that the communication protocol allows also user settings to be read/written !
There are only a few (and not very useful) settings, which can be set via Training Gym.

I'm always angry, when after a firmware update I will loose all my settings.  :(
Maybe this is my personal problem, but I also sometimes do not exactly remember,
which parameters I have to set again and which values I selected last time.
So I will be disappointed during the next 3-4 trainings, when I discover one setting after the
other, which is not set according to my needs (or to my wishes).

And therefore, I really would like to have a possibility to read the current settings from the watch
into some software. Then save / store / display / edit the values and write it back to the watch
at a later time.

Okay - Which parameters are we talking about ? Here I have the same problems as mentioned
above: "...I sometimes do not exactly remember, which parameters I have to set..."

Anyway - let's try:

High priority:
1. Configuration of the four user pages (each contains 1 to 4 configurable parameters)
2. Configuration of Lap page
3. Language and unit-system (meter/miles and speed/pace).
4. Auto-Lap mode and value

Lower priority:
5. Heart rate limits
6. Alarm modes

This is what I remember rigth now. Maybe I have to extend this list after next firmware update.

@Phil: It would be a great job, if you could include these functions into a new version of your
Sport Track plugin. Up to now I didn't see any need to use it, instead of Training Gym or of the
basic Sport Track plugin.
But if you could provide a solution, I would definitly move away from Training Gym.
Especially after I heard, there will be a new version of Training Gym - but imcompatible with GH-625.

@All: If you use more or other user parameters - or if you remember better than I do:
Please extend/modify the list and give some feedback what you think about a solution
for this problem !

Hello Hubert,

Quote
High priority:
1. Configuration of the four user pages (each contains 1 to 4 configurable parameters)
2. Configuration of Lap page
3. Language and unit-system (meter/miles and speed/pace).
4. Auto-Lap mode and value
5. GPS setting; GPS [NORMAL] and WAAS/EGNOS [ON]   *(1)
6. Activity setting; ALERTS [ON/OFF] *(2)

*(1) I found out that if Waas/egnos is off, it seems (3 occasions is not much, but after that I discovert that with the new loaded firmware X I had forgotten to switch it on) that the GPS. especially the Altitude, is more off then with it on.
*(2) To be able and set the alarms on the plugin would be more eye catching than it is now in the watch. Some times you don't want to be disturbed by the alarms like hart rate max, for example riding in a group makes some times the HRM crazy and if you know you will be in a group it is easy to switch off, by seeing it on the plugin.

In general I would prefer the whole configuration to be restored, but on the other hand if you want to change the user pages it is nice you be-able to so.

I am glad you (Hubert) spotted it ;), I did read over it. :(
So Phill if you willing to do this, I would be delighted. :D

Best regards,

Albert

Hi folks!
Thanks for your interest.

As I said, I will probably implement this feature in a next version (actually it's already partially implemented, I just left it on hold), but I can't promise anything about timings, because this has a really low priority on my schedule.

The bad news is that I don't think the user pages are configurable by software. Most of the other settings do, but not that one.

These are really bad news !   :'(  The user pages were the most important settings for me...
As a first step I would also be happy just to save and restore the settings and not to create
new configurations by software. I don't know, if this makes a difference ?

Hi!

I agree with Hubert.
It would be very comfortable to save/restore or configure the settings on the PC ::)

Hi Hubert,

I don't think that makes any difference. The user pages are not configurable, unless there's some hidden feature in the firmware that I don't know (Geoffrey, are you there?  ;) ).

But once again I came to the conclusion that it's too much work to create the user interface for all the settings, be able to edit them one by one, etc, and I don't have time for that right now.
So, I will add the save/restore of the whole settings, which is much easier and is useful when updating the firmware.

Stay tuned on the plugin thread.

-Phil

Hi Phil,

I am here. :)
Right now there is only user profile setting ready!
If want to configure the all information, we have to modify the protocol.

Sincerely,

Geoffrey

Maybe you can note this item for future watch models (and don't forget !  ;D).

I don't think, that it is important enough to ask for a modification for the current model.
However - I still think, that it would increase the customers benefit and therefore it would be
an advantage for future models.

However - this applies to the ability for configuration only !
I really appreciate the fact, that Phil is willing to provide a function to save/restore the settings !
I think, this is an important function and it should be available.
Thanks to Phil !

Hi Phil,

I forgot one thing to mention !

So, I will add the save/restore of the whole settings, which is much easier and is useful when updating the firmware.
Do you already know, in which format you will save the settings ?
If it is not too complicated, I would suggest to save the data into a readable text-format.
So this would allow the user to modify (or to destroy  ;D) the values by a simple text editor
and this provides a very basic way of editing the settings.
Do you think, that's possible ?

Hello Hubert,

I have taken account of the consideration into next product.
I also hope to make GH-625 more convenient, but will be later since our resource are occupied.

No Geoffrey, there are many other settings that could be modified with the current protocol, I tested it myself. (My question was about the 4 user pages, but I don't think these are configurable.)

I just takes more work to implement it in the software, because you need to decode the communication data and show it in the user interface.
That's why I only implement the save/restore, but not the edit feature, leaving the data untouched, without the need to decode/encode.

I don't think that's possible. The data is in binary format and it's not readable.
Trying to dig into binary data and modifying it would just mess it up and would be more difficult than simply use the watch.

Anyway, it's about ready.
I'll just do some testing and will release it later tonight.

Hi everybody !

I'm afraid, that not everybody saw this little message:
Anyway, it's about ready.

So - everybody, who is interested in the parameter setting save/restore function, please have
a look here:

Phil finished the update of the plugin and it works fine !
Thank you Phil - this was really great !
