Firmware update failed - PLEASE HELP, what to do???
« on: May 14, 2010, 01:32:03 pm »

Hi Geoffrey,

I tried to update the new firmware, but the operation failed for some reason. Now the watch is showing: Update Program, Connect OK, Programming....., 000% programmed.

I will not power off the device, but it is not reacting any UP+Down+Pwr combinations.

Please help, what to do??

The device powered off by itself and is now bricked.

How about the following info that you wrote in the past:

-----
For the new coming products (GH561,505...), we will never worry about this problem. Because we decide enhanced CPU with separate bootloader flash.
-----

IS this still valid? How can I wake up the bricked GH-505?

Try this: Press and hold the power button for 14 seconds to do hardware reset if the system is
halted.
That is what the manual says.

I have tried this and no help. The device is completely dead.

Thanks to excellent support from Globalsat (Geoffrey), my device waked up, finally.

The design of the new generation is really F(*&%#$#(me!)-proof. The Bootloader can recover if the FW upgrade is failed. (The procedure is not described in the manual...should it be in case GS does not want too many support requests?) As well, some bugs were found related to the PC Software so that the manual com port setting was not possible.

I suspect the bad connection (some contamination or oxidation??) of the USB clip may have caused the failure.

I hope I can now join to the testing group...

Hi all,

PC Software can't manually set the com port will have a risk when firmware updated failed. It will lead to can't recover device even we have separate bootloader. I have asked engineer about this matter and expect be resolved soon.

At this moment, the cable is engineering sample, not final stage because we have quite limited samples. We will take care of this. Don't worry.

Regards

Geoffrey

P.S. The hot key to recover system is: POWER+DOWN+ENTER. :)

Hi,

The Bootloader can recover if the FW upgrade is failed. (The procedure is not described in the manual...)

And ? Is it a secret ? Or was it just what Geoffrey said:
"P.S. The hot key to recover system is: POWER+DOWN+ENTER." ?
I thought, you had tried this before ?

Please let us know, what finally woke up your watch !

First of all, PWR+DOWN+ENTER is not described in any manual. Please note, this is a new combination, not the same as used in GH-615.

Yes, this enabled the boot mode, but there was something very strange in it, because this key combination didn't work all the time. I managed somehow to enter the boot mode by pushing all the buttons randomly and at the the PWR+DOWN+ENTER combination. I did tested this several times and every time I managed to enter the boot mode it happened in this way...
