ND-100S gets position but won't update co-ord's / speed
« on: June 08, 2011, 05:30:55 pm »

Hi everyone,
Today I installed the ND-100S - no problem.

When I use the ND-100S application, I find that the GPS dongle receives a fix, but then won't update the position (As I move around the garden) or speed.

I have updated with the latest drivers (as far as I know) and am using the most up to date version of the 'ND-100S application' (The application informed me there was a web update and I proceeded)

Ar far as i'm aware the dongle is operating at 4800 baud rate as it is the only option which shows up data in the 'terminal' tab when I click 'Connect'

Has this happened anyone before? Any ideas? It's quite frustrating!

In the Fix field under Field mode, what does it give you?

What is the version of the ND-100S application? To determine this, go to Help > About ND-100S.

Have you tried moving around the block to see if the coordinates and speed change?

If the coordinates/speed still does not update, possibly the Static Navigation feature of this unit is enabled. For more details, please refer here: http://www.usglobalsat.com/forum/index.php?topic=1417.0

Thanks for your response.

On an unrelated note, I had to format my HDD today (WinXP)

Just in-case it is a mistake I am making, can you please confirm whether I should install the driver first and then insert the USB GPS dongle, or insert the dongle and then let Windows search for the driver?

Am I best to use the most up to date driver, which can be found online here: http://www.usglobalsat.com/s-124-nd-100s-support.aspx

Many thanks for your help

You need to install the driver first. The link that you provided should have the latest driver for the unit. Just save the file directly to your desktop and extract it. Double-click on the Prolific Driver Installer application and let it install the driver.

Afterwards, plug-in the device and check your Device Manager. You can do this by pressing the Start (Windows) button. Right-click on Computer > Manage > Computer Management > System Tools > Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT) > Prolific to USB Serial Comm Port (COMXX).

Let us know how it goes.

Just a quick update to this...
Installed latest driver and inserted USB dongle, blue lit on solid.

After 20 mins outside, the light is still blue solid.

See below screenshots:

In the ND-100s application, the settings are: Com4, Baud 4800

Am I doing something wrong?

Are you surrounded by any tall trees or buildings around? Outside, do you have a clear access to an open sky?

Yes, all tests have been outdoors.

I just tried again at the other side of the house (again outdoors) and still no joy. Clear sky, apart from a single building that i'm about 80ft away from, the rest of the sky is clear

Are you using the provided USB Cable that came with the device? Can you please try unplugging it and attach the cable? Then, connect the unit to another USB port.

I have tried it with and without the little extension cable, and have tried the dongle in all 3 laptop USB ports.... exact same thing.

Here's a screenshot from MiniCDU, making sure that Baud Rate was set to 4800bps

In the ND-100S application, have you tried pressing the Cold Start button? You can do this by going to Tools > Cold Start GPS. This will reset your GPS Receiver. Please make sure to attach the cable to the device as to extend the unit away from the computer. The reason for this is that some notebooks, laptops, and tablets produce a high level of electrical interference. In turn, it weakens the GPS signal within close proximity of the device.

Now, let the program run for a few minutes or so outside with a clear access to an open sky.

Also, please check your email for further instructions.

I have done all you mention above, trying Cold Starts each time.

I will try it tomorrow on another laptop. If i'm still not getting anywhere then I will follow instructions via e-mail.

Many thanks
