What are benefits of a SuperCap?
« on: June 12, 2012, 12:12:39 pm »

Hi,

In the User Guide for the EM-406a, it says, "Built-in SuperCap to maintain system data for rapid satellite acquisition." It also states, "Cold Start 42 seconds average, Warm Start 38 seconds average." Does the Warm Start refer to starting up when the SuperCap still has power, and a Cold Start refer to a start after the SuperCap died? Does the SuperCap only speed up acquisition by *FOUR* seconds on average? A four second improvement is NOT any more rapid, so this contradicts the note earlier that states it is for "rapid acquisition".

1. What is the benefit of a module with a SuperCap vs. one without one?
2. How much faster does it acquire with the SuperCap vs. with out it?
3. What do the Cold Start and Warm Start times refer to?

Let me know!

Thanks,

Dan

Hello Dan,
It also states, "Cold Start 42 seconds average, Warm Start 38 seconds average." Does the Warm Start refer to starting up when the SuperCap still has power, and a Cold Start refer to a start after the SuperCap died? Does the SuperCap only speed up acquisition by *FOUR* seconds on average?
The following values are provided by the chipset manufacturer, which is the SiRF/CSR, and they' are average figures based on their experiments/tests. Usually, the warm start should be faster than cold start. However, the 38 second value for Warm Start was the worst case in their experiments.

1. What is the benefit of a module with a SuperCap vs. one without one?
Per our engineers, this is used to attain a quick GPS fix due to Warm Start.

2. How much faster does it acquire with the SuperCap vs. with out it?
It depends on the userís environment for GPS fix (warm start) speed and there are no values available.

3. What do the Cold Start and Warm Start times refer to?
Evidently, the speed of warm start/cold start entirely depends on the userís environment and SiRF/CSR provided these average values for reference only.

So, please just test out the unit for yourself and come up with your own conclusions. Thanks.
