Not really

30 min 1m under water, but that is widely perceived as optimistic, for other devices.
I while I have higher confidence in the 625XT than other devices though. Compare to a Garmin ForeRunner 305 (also IPX7), you can feel how the unit opens when twisting it. The 625XT is sturdier.
I do not hesitate to use the device in rain or occasionally rinse it, but will not take it swimming.

I would use a case, yes.
I have seen ziplock in bathcaps for triathletes. GPS does not work well in water.

Slightly off topic:
For phones I have seen rubberbags that would be usable for a watch too. But it would be hard to strap a watch with those.
For windsurfing and similar I guess you want it on the arm, maybe on the sail.
A rubberbag and a phone arm holder would maybe work. I have not seen an arm holder for the wrist, only upper arm though.
The GB-580 would fit better, or the draft design you linked too.
If the device came with (or was optionally sold with) an arm holder where the device could be used with rubber bags, would be a winner for me too, also for running.

Even though we design the device as IPX7 standard, but we did the internal testing with more strict condition (water 3m).
Last time Longjog and my friends went for swimming and it worked truely with their masters.

Is the warranty valid if bathing/surfing with the 625XT?
Also salt water?

Not so much for me, but a friend wants a device to surf and use in triathlons.

The IPX rating of the GH-625XT is 7. It means that it's protected against water immersion - Immersion for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter (http://www.usglobalsat.com/s-33-ipx-description.aspx). It's not recommended nor suitable for swimming or diving since that would exceed the IPX7 standard. So, any activity that exceeds the IPX standard would void the warranty of the device.

Hi, my 625xt has had many hours of use windsurfing and kitesurfing with lots of 23-25 knot crashes, still perfect.
any chance of a countdown? with the option of say, when the count down is being used, the lightup button can be a sync button? sequence from 5 min.

I mean for it to be used as a startwatch for racing, and for the sync button, (any button to be used) so that it once pressed it syncs the time down to the nearest minute.
