Instant Pace with Firmware F-GGH-2P-1210231
« on: November 25, 2012, 06:09:41 am »

Hi my dear friends,

I am curious about your experiences with the Instant-Pace with new FW-Version.
For me it is to less smoothing.
The pace is jumping in a range of felt 25 seconds if I run around a constant pace of 4:40 min/km.
This range makes the Pace-value unuseable for me.

Please  give a feedback for the engineers of GS.

Best regards

Release notes:
1. PACE value modify to average per 30 seconds.
....
this seems to be not enough smoothing.
What about calculating the average of the last 10 30 sec. average-values?

Best regards

This range makes the Pace-value unuseable for me.

I've noticed similar behavior on my watch with the new firmware.  The instant pace seems to jump around relatively erratically rendering it not that useful.  I do like how the interval is shorter now, so that if you stop momentarily or fluctuate your speed throughout a workout, it will show that in a more reactive fashion.... however, it's just not very accurate.

For me, I usually train at somewhere between a 5:30 to 6:00 min/mile pace on the street, and I'm generally seeing the instant-pace displaying erratic readings anywhere from 5:05 to 6:10 on a run where the pace should realistically be pretty smooth at around 5:45.  If I speed up for a duration during the run and do a fast mile, I've seen the instant pace say as fast as 4:40 Min/Mile, and I was probably doing more like 5:05 to 5:10.

I've gone on 3 runs with the new firmware so far and noticed this behavior on all 3 runs.  I'll do more testing, and try to provide a little more info if I see anything else that could be helpful.

Sorry for the late response.

Alright, thanks sharing your experiences and observations.

Please let us know how it goes with the other testings and provide more details about them. Thanks.

I've had a chance to do a few more runs with the new firmware and the inconsistency of the real-time pace is definitely a legitimate concern.  I've been trying to pay more attention to it in order to verify that it is in-fact inaccurate and not just a factor of me varying my pace.

I went on a 10 mile run last night and averaged a 5:54 min/mile pace the entire way, while trying to glance down at the watch at least a 4 or 5 times per mile to see my instant pace and match it against what I felt was my actual pace.  My actual pace seemed to be pretty consistent based on how I felt and the fact that my average pace wasn't really fluctuating much except for a gradual increase throughout the run (I tend to pick up my pace continually through runs after the first 2 miles).  Often times I would look down at the real-time pace and it would show values like 5:20 or 5:30, then I would look again about a minute later and it would say 6:10 without me varying my pace at all.

Maybe I'll take the watch for a 2 mile drive tomorrow in my car at a steady 10 MPH and see how it reacts to that in terms of real-time speed readings throughout that test situation.

Thanks for the additional info.

Just awaiting response from our engineers about this.

Also, keep us posted about your drive test and let us know how it goes.

I tried taking my watch and driving with it to work.  The speed seemed to be pretty constant at roadway driving speeds, without too many unusual speed fluctuations while driving at a steady speed.

I want to try to do the same thing but at a speed more similar to that of a running speed... somewhere between 9 to 11 MPH and drive at that speed for about a mile to see what types of real-time-speed fluctuations I see.  I'll post back with the results of that test when I get a chance to do that.
