I have an iBook G4 executing MacOSx 10.5.8.
I installed the driver for Mac Os X 10.6 by mistake and followed the procedure to remove the driver :
unplug the GPS USB device
then executed, as root :
"cd /McIntosh HD/System/Library/Extensions"
"kextunload PS2302.kext"
"kextunload ProlificUsbSerial.kext"

When I install the right Mac Os X 10.5 driver (PL2303.1.2.1.pkg), I get the message that I can't install the "Prolific USB to Serial Cable driver 1.2.1" because a more recent version of this software has been already installed.

When I look under System Information with no BU-353 plugged in, I see no USB serial driver under the "Material" section.
When I plug the BU-353 GPS, I do a window refresh and the Prolific USB-Serial Controller shows up.
Unplugging the BU-353 GPS makes this Prolific USB-Serial Controller vanish.

Which file do I still need to remove or what can I do to install the right driver ?

Please carefully follow the instructions below:
 
1. Have your USB GPS device unplugged and open up your Hard Drive folder and go to System/Library/Extensions folder and search for "ProlificUsbSerial.kext" and delete that file and restart your computer.

2. After the restart, reinstall the driver "PL2303_1.4.0.dmg" from ( http://www.usglobalsat.com/store/download/62/md_pl2303h_hx_x_dmg_v1.2.1r2.zip ), which is the USB driver for Mac OS 10.5 or lower.

3. After the install, it will ask you to restart the computer again.

4. You can reference this document on how to install the driver ( http://www.usglobalsat.com/store/download/57/br355_gps_mac_v2.0.pdf ).

5. After your computer is restarted, then plug in the USB GPS Receiver and use our GPS Utility to test your USB GPS Receiver:
( http://www.usglobalsat.com/store/download/62/mac_gps_utility_v2.zip ).

6. Configure the application settings to the following:

Port: /dev/cu.usbserial
Rate: 4800
Units: Miles

Yep ... did all this ... and that didn't fix it.

Please make sure to save the driver into your desktop and try installing the driver once more.

Driver has been copied from my download directory to the desktop - both files are the same
Tried to re-installed the driver : same error.
Isn't there a file that holds the specs to that driver somewhere ?
I suspect that would be the file I need to remove.
Is there a way to know ALL the files that are copied over during the installation ? that could help.

Apparently, the only thing that you need to remove is the ProlificUsbSerial.kext file. Other than that, there are no other files that needs to be deleted. The possible reason that you're getting that error is that the driver is not completely removed from the system.

Have you tried to follow the instructions step by step?
Do you have the BU-353 disconnected from your computer?
Did you go to System / Library / Extensions folder and search for the specified kext file?
Did you drag the kext file to Trash and empty it?
Did you also restart the computer?

Again, yes, that is what I did ...
To ensure the ProlificUsbSerial.kext file does not exist on my computer, I executed the following in a terminal window :
"sudo find / -name ProlificUsbSerial.kext -print", and this returned nothing.

Got it. After going through your Hard Drive, can you please provide a screenshot of your System / Library / Extensions folder as shown below? When you go to that folder, you should be able to find other kext files as well.
