Barometer
« on: June 01, 2012, 07:01:18 pm »

Hi,
I am receiving some strange reading from the barometer.
For the last 2 days, I went biking to work with the GPS.
It is about a 12 km ride, a tiny bit of a climb to get there.
When I am looking at the stats, it is all over the place altitude wise.
The altitude when I leave home is not the same when I get back.
Here is 4 screenshot of the altitude graph, in chronological order [to work, from work] - [to work from work].

[HOME - WORK]

[WORK- HOME]

For the 4 rides, I waited until I had a strong GPS signal before starting.
Is there a way to have the barometer function better?
Any idea?

If you need any more information, I would be more then happy to dig this further, I love this product!

Thanks for any input!

The elevation is adjusted from the GPS elevation at activity start. Described here:
http://www.usglobalsat.com/forum/index.php?topic=4050.msg11749#msg11749
I assume the fix is only done before activity start. Can Globalsat confirm?

If the fix has not been applied at activity start, then it is likely that there will be an offset.
A competitor had some weird kludge where you should start recording when standing still to get a good fix.

It is hard to see accuracy or if a fix have been applied to my knowledge. Something to add in the firmware?

Another problem is that if the pressure changes during the activity. ST plugin Waypoints and Courses should be able to fix that (as well as the offset?):

It looks like you are using sport tracks. Just download the altitude correction plugin. That should help.

The barometer is one of the selling points for the 580.
While the elevation correction plugin normally gives a good overall profile, the top of the hills are not exactly correct and the levels are sometimes incorrect (bridges, close to edges etc).
A barometer has other limitations (offset at start, skew), but is much better.
GPS elevation is always the worst.

So I suggest to not using ElevationCorrection with the 580 and correct the elevation with Waypoints and Courses instead.
I hope there is a workaround to apply the elevation offset fix.

I consider using the 580 while running, to get better elevation profile of some tracks I run.

Hello korivo,

Can you please provide the activity file? To acquire this file from the GB-580P, please refer to its User Manual (http://www.usglobalsat.com/downloads/training_gym_pro_instructions_manual.pdf) starting on page 14.

Then, forward the activity file to support@usglobalsat.com, so we could for further review the issue that you're experiencing.

The elevation is set if there are more then 6 satellites and a fixed 3D, only at the beginning, once.
To correct the barometer again set it on manual then the there is no calibration from GPS and the Barometer is correcting it self. I tried this a few times and works. After that you can set it to auto again.

But what I suggested a long time a go is to have in the Firmware home altitude field to fill in, lot of problems will go then.

With regards,

Albert

Hello albert,

Regarding your suggestion about the Home Altitude, I have shared that with our engineers, along with your other suggestions.

Just let me know if you have any questions.
