Does the BU-353-S4 have a SuperCap?
« on: June 12, 2012, 12:15:36 pm »

Hi,

Does the BU-353-S4 have a SuperCap or not?
If so, then why?
If not, then why not?

Let me know!

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

The manual does read "Built-in Supercap For Rapid Acquisition".

Actually, according to USGlobalSat Technical Support, there is NO SuperCap! It has a battery:

Thank you for contacting USGlobalSat Customer Care. The BU-353-S4 has a built in Li battery for back up power to keep the device with a hot start for up to 18 hrs.

Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks.

This datasheet http://usglobalsat.com/store/download/688/bu353s4_ds.pdf states:
Warm start: 35 sec., average
Cold start: 35 sec., average

This leads to my main question:
WHY IS THERE A BATTERY IF THE COLD START TAKES THE SAME TIME AS A WARM START?

The BU-353-S4 has a built in Li battery for back up power to keep the device with a hot start for up to 18 hrs.

After checking with our engineers, they said that the numbers given for Cold, Warm, and Hot Start are actually numbers provided to us from the manufacturer of the SiRF IV chipset, which is the SiRF/CSR. Our engineers said not to worry to much about the given values because they are just an average and it will depend on your environment and situation.

So, please just test out the unit for yourself and come up with your own conclusions.
