Driver issues, BU-353 S4 ...
« on: August 06, 2012, 11:05:56 am »

Hi, I have a MacBook running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 (Leopard). I am trying to run a US GlobalSat BU-353-S4. Initially, I made a mistake and downloaded the wrong driver (the one for Mac OS X 10.6 and above). I have deleted “ProlificUsbSerial.kext" from my System/Library/Extensions folder. I have now downloaded what I believe is the correct driver (PL2303_1.2.1). However, when I try to install it, I get the following message: “You cannot install Prolific USB to Serial Cable driver v1.2.1 for Mac OS X on this volume. A newer version of this software already exists on this volume.” Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong, and how to do it right? Very grateful for any help ...

Thanks, got the email, and ran through everything suggested, but with no luck. Any other moves I can try?

Perhaps, you can try following the instructions below.

1. Have your USB GPS device unplugged and open up your Hard Drive folder and go to System/Library/Extensions folder and search for "ProlificUsbSerial.kext" and delete that file, as well as from your Trash Bin. Then, restart your computer.

2. After the restart, reinstall this driver (http://www.usglobalsat.com/store/download/62/md_pl2303h_hx_x_dmg_v1.2.1r2.zip), which is the USB driver for Mac OS 10.5 or lower.

3. After the install, it will ask you to restart the computer again.

4. You can reference this document on how to install the driver ( http://www.usglobalsat.com/store/download/57/br355_gps_mac_v2.0.pdf ).

5. After your computer is restarted, then plug in the USB GPS Receiver and use our GPS Utility to test your USB GPS Receiver:

6. Configure the application settings to the following:

Port: /dev/cu.usbserial
Rate: 4800
Units: Miles

Thanks, but I have tried all of this. I originally deleted "ProlificUsbSerial.kext" and there is now no sign of this in the Extensions folder.

Hi, any progress on this one yet? I want to use this unit with my MacBook to go sailing with - and that Great British summer is disappearing fast!

Sorry for the delay. Our engineers are still actively and diligently checking your issue with Prolific (the manufacturer of the driver).

Once we have received a response, we'll go ahead and let you know. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Sorry for the delay. Our engineers just got a response from Prolific and they suggested the following:

Please try additional steps below:

Delete these files:
- /System/Library/Extensions/ProlificUsbSerial.kext
- /Library/Receipts/PL2303_1.4.0.pkg

If in the case you are unable to access them through Finder, open the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities/) and input the following commands:
sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/ProlificUsbSerial.kext/
sudo rm -rf /Library/Receipts/PL2303_1.4.0.pkg/

Let me know how it goes.

Success! Unit now up and running and working seamlessly with PassagePlus charts software. The trick seemed to be going in through Terminal. Really appreciate you sticking with this problem until it was solved. Many thanks for your help.
