BU-353 with Windows 8 & Windows 8.1
« on: November 13, 2012, 12:39:44 pm »

Unfortunately, the specific USB to Serial IC chip that is in the BU-353 (PL2303 HXA) is sourced from a 3rd party company, Prolific, and they have announced that there will be no Windows 8 support/drivers for that HXA version of the USB to Serial IC. Basically, this is something that's outside of our control.

We would like to suggest upgrading your USB GPS Receiver to either the ND-100S (http://www.usglobalsat.com/p-590-nd-100s.aspx) or the BU-353-S4 (http://www.usglobalsat.com/p-688-bu-353-s4.aspx), as they have the HXD version of the chip, which supports Windows 8 & Windows 8.1.

Hello primo,

Welcome to the forums! Just a couple of questions about this:

Were you able to see the drivers being installed successfully?
Have you tried going to the Device Manager and check the com port number?
Did it have a yellow error exclamation point?
Did you get any error messages?
Were you able to test it with a NMEA-compliant program without any problems?

I was wondering, have you tried testing the BU-353 SiRFIII with a full retail version of Windows 8?

We have found a work around, on how to get the BU-353 to work on Windows 8. We have tried these steps on our Windows 8 laptop, and it seemed to work.

Can someone try this and see if it works for you?

1 - Remove the Windows 8 Driver by going to your Device Manager (CTRL + X), go to Ports, right click on the "Prolific USB to Serial.." device and click Uninstall with the delete drivers option.
2 - Reboot.
3 - REMOVE the BU-353. *** Don't plug in back in until step 6 ***
4 - Install the older driver: http://www.usglobalsat.com/store/download/62/windows_allinone_usb_driver_v130.zip . (May need compatability mode to do that)
5 - Tell windows to NOT automatically update drivers (or it will kill the driver each time.)
6 - Plug in the BU-353
7 - Test with the latest verison of GPSInfo: http://www.usglobalsat.com/store/downloads/GPSInfo.zip

We would love to hear your feedback.

Please download these instructions and USB driver to get your BU-353 working on Windows 8 & Windows 8.1:
http://www.usglobalsat.com/downloads/pl2303hxa_windows_8_driver_installation.zip

After you have the USB Driver installed properly, please then test it with our latest version of GPSInfo Utility that is Windows 8 compatible: http://www.usglobalsat.com/store/downloads/GPSInfo.zip

If you're looking for a USB GPS Receiver that is fully compatible with Windows 8, we highly recommend the new BU-353-S4, which uses the new SiRF Star IV chipset that offers better performance, faster time to fix and better accuracy: http://www.usglobalsat.com/p-688-bu-353-s4.aspx

Thanks.

I just tried this procedure to make my BU353 compatible with Windows 8 and it worked great! In fact it even worked with a LabView program I had written to read the output of the 353 several years ago!

Thanx.
